Purpose
This policy establishes guidelines for the fair and orderly use of storage lockers at Hacksburg, ensuring that all members have equitable access to secure personal storage.
Eligibility
Locker rentals are available exclusively to current Hacksburg members in good standing. Membership must remain active for the duration of the rental. If a membership lapses or is revoked, the locker rental is considered terminated and the locker must be vacated.
Locker Rental
- No additional charge: Locker rentals are included at no additional charge as a member benefit.
- One locker at a time: Members may rent one locker at a time. Group Memberships qualify for one locker to share among the group members. Additional lockers may be made available at the discretion of Hacksburg leadership if inventory allows.
- The first and last name, as recorded on the membership application, should be written on blue tape and applied to the locker. Group Lockers should have the name of the group along with the representatives first and last name.
- First-come, first-served: Rentals are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Members should contact a Hacksburg officer or check the designated sign-up system to request a locker.
- Lockers remain assigned as long as the member’s membership is active and the locker is in active use.
Locks
- Only Hacksburg-supplied locks may be used on rented lockers. Members may not use personal locks or any other locking device not provided by Hacksburg.
- A $10 refundable deposit is required to obtain a Hacksburg lock. This deposit is collected at the time the lock is issued. The deposit will be returned in full when the lock is returned to Hacksburg in good, undamaged condition.
- If a lock is lost or damaged, the deposit will be forfeited and the member will be responsible for any replacement costs exceeding the deposit amount.
- Locks remain the property of Hacksburg at all times and must be returned upon vacating the locker or termination of membership.
Locker Use & Contents
- Lockers are intended for personal project materials, tools, and equipment relevant to makerspace activities.
- The following are prohibited from storage in lockers:
- Hazardous, flammable, or toxic materials
- Food or perishables
- Illegal items or controlled substances
- Items belonging to others without their explicit permission
- Hacksburg is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items stored in lockers.
- Members should not store irreplaceable or high-value items in lockers.
Inspection & Access
- Hacksburg reserves the right to inspect any locker with reasonable cause or for safety purposes. When possible, the member will be notified in advance.
- In the event of an emergency or safety concern, Hacksburg may open a locker immediately and without prior notice.
- Hacksburg may remove locks and access lockers belonging to members whose membership has lapsed, without prior notice, following a reasonable attempt to contact the member.
Vacating A Locker
- Members who wish to give up their locker should notify a Hacksburg officer, remove all belongings, and return the Hacksburg lock to receive their deposit back.
- Members are responsible for vacating their locker and returning the lock before their membership ends, regardless of the reason for termination (expiration, cancellation, or revocation).
- If a locker is not vacated prior to membership termination, Hacksburg reserves the right to remove any remaining contents and dispose of or donate them at Hacksburg’s discretion. The lock deposit will be forfeited in this case.
- Lockers left with a personal (non-Hacksburg) lock will have the lock removed by Hacksburg at the member’s expense, and the policy violation may affect membership standing.

Violations of this policy — including use of unauthorized locks, storage of prohibited items, or failure to vacate prior to membership termination — may result in:
- Immediate loss of locker privileges

- Disciplinary action up to and including membership suspension or revocation, at the discretion of Hacksburg leadership
