Hacksburg Beverage Cooling Competition

Key Details

Teams need to arrive and to be setup BEFORE 6:30pm and shold be ready to start at 6:30pm.

Description

The object of the contest is for teams to design and build a device that will cool a beverage from ambient temperature to a target temperature of 42 °F (5.56 °C) and dispense it into at least 3 Solo-size drinking cups in a 2-minute time frame. Points will be awarded on how close the beverage is to the target temperature as well as the number of cups filled; see Scoring below for more details.

All contestant beverages will be of similar consistency and have the same starting temperature; however, the starting temperature is unknown and may not be consistent. We will purchase and store all beverages in the same location before the contest.

Contest Rules

Teams

  • Teams may have 1-3 people.
  • A person may not be a member of more than one team.
  • Teams must pre-register here by 19:00 (7:00 PM) EDT on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
  • A registration fee of 5$ for Hacksburg member teams (teams with a hacksburg team captain) and 15$ for non-Hacksburg teams must be paid to participate.

  • Any beverage that passes through a team's contraption will become the property of that team and may be distributed to bystanders, but the contest organizers shall have neither control nor responsibility of such distribution and consumption by third parties.

Device Requirements

  • You must build a device, anyone just pouring cans into cups will be disqualified.
  • The device must cool the beverage from starting temperature.
  • The device must be designed and constructed by the team.
    • Power will be available, but is not required.
  • The device must be able to fill 3 Solo-size cups with beverage.
  • The device and its team must not put anything into the beverage.
  • The device should not cause the beverage to spill or leak.

Scoring

  • Time to fill first cup: (5000 / [time in seconds]) points.
  • Temperature: -3 points per degree off target in either direction.
    • Temperature will be averaged between the first cup filled, the cup filled at or around the 1-minute mark, and the last cup filled.
  • Volume: 1 point per cup of beverage cooled over 3.
  • Other Penalties:
    • -5 points for each beverage that has its flavor tainted (metallic taste, etc).
    • -5 points for each completely flat beverage.
    • -1 point for each incident of spillover; try not to waste our precious beverages.

Formula: ( (5000/first cup full) + ((Avg F of 3 cups difference from 42F)*3*# cups) + (# of cups -3)
